(The Chosen Kid)
- 我有 Say No 嗎?Not really (個心講咗一萬次 No,但口講唔出)。
我有 Say NO 嗎?
(Embrace the Unknown)
Say Yes!
【English Version】If They Believe in You, Why Don’t You?
I think most of us, when given opportunities, tend to doubt our own abilities first.
- Promotion? “Huh? I don’t think I can handle it!”
- Competition? “Huh? I don’t think I’m as talented as the next person!”
- New Project? “Huh? I have never done that before!”
Does this sound familiar?
The Reluctant Participant
When I was in primary school, there were always competitions, but no kid wanted to spend time practicing (we all just wanted to play!).
So, the teachers had to assign students, and 8 times out of 10, they appointed me!
- Did I like it? NO!
- Did I want to win? NO.
- Did I say no? Not really (I screamed NO in my heart but smiled face-to-face!).
I just got on with it. Did I find those competitions useful at the time? Not at all.
It got so ridiculous that my Dad once proudly asked me, “Are there no other kids in school?” LOL. It was that bad!
The Accidental Leader
Fast forward to my previous career. One day my Boss said, “We will offer you a permanent position, but you need to lead a team, and the scope is bigger.”
Did I like leading a team? Hell NO!
I had always enjoyed being an individual contributor because I was in control of my own performance.
Did I say NO to my Boss? Haha, maybe a few “Oh Nos” in my heart, but my official reply was: “I have never led a team before, but I will try!”
Voila. I got the job.
But just before my official start day, fear kicked in. I started doubting my decision to just “go with the flow.”
Suddenly, a tiny little voice in my heart whispered:
“If other people see your potential, why don’t you see it yourself?”
Finding Faith in Opportunity
Right there, I got it.
That thought gave me the strength, faith, and confidence I needed.
It’s an opportunity knocking on my door. Yes, I might not have done it before. Yes, I might fail miserably. But no one is born with all the knowledge; we all start somewhere, and we all learn as we go.
And if we fail badly? It might feel horrifying and look messy, but hey, it won’t kill us!
It will only make us wiser and better equipped for our next attempt, right?
Stay Curious
Finally, I have come to terms with opportunities. Whenever they come now, I gladly say YES!
I treat them as the start of a journey, a new chapter. I stay curious about what I will learn instead of focusing on the win/loss at the end.
When I learn something, no one can take that away from me. My wealth of knowledge grows with each opportunity. When viewed this way, challenges become much less daunting.
Next time a new opportunity comes your way, instead of a reflexive “No,” try asking yourself:
“If someone sees the potential in you, is it actually YOU that refuses to see the potential in yourself?”
